We may think of mission grapes as the long-forgotten fodder for sacramental wine, but these grapes are very much relevant today. Across California, a small but dedicated group of vintners are trying to shed light on the grape’s storied past by finding new and innovative ways to plant and make mission wines. Dry, sweet, or fortified, mission wine is making a small but poignant comeback.
